Primal Berry Wheatgrass Smoothie

As many of you already know, I am pro-smoothie when it comes to the food world. I find that smoothies can be as versatile as they are delicious. The combination of ingredients that can be used are endless, and I have played around with lots of different combos myself. Not long ago, I created the Primal Green Smoothie which got very good feedback. It certainly packs a nutritional wallop, combining spinach, kale, and fruit, along with whey protein and some other muscle building ingredients.

But variety is good, and I have created a new monster to add to your smoothie arsenal. This one includes wheatgrass, something I have known about for some time, but never really got on the band wagon… until about a week ago. A friend bought me a shot… not vodka, but wheatgrass. I told them they wasted their money and I could have just have easily gone and chewed someone’s lawn for about the same effect. Then 20 minutes or so passed, and I felt awesome! Corny as it sounds, I felt a heightened sense of well being, and a smooth but high energy level that carried on into my workout later that day. I ended up going to Whole Foods and bought a decent sized container of the fresh stuff! I thought they’d be charging $8-10 for the stuff, but to my pleasant surprise, it was just $3. Nice!

Effects and Benefits of this beast of a smoothie

Well I’m currently sipping on the smoothie I’m writing about… hey, I practice what I preach! And after an intense workout of 70 burpees, 60 ab mat sit-ups, 50 kettlebell swings, 40 pullups, and 30 handstand pushups (12 minutes flat was my time), I was feeling pretty beat. As I continue to drink, my senses are coming back to, which is more than likely a good thing. Ahhh….

A mood and energy booster for sure, 100% of the ingredients used are beneficial, and when blended together, are a delightful concoction of health. A brief of the ingredients:

  • Almonds: Rich in magnesium, vitamin E and healthy fats. Heart healthy and lowers LDL-cholesterol (the bad stuff)
  • Berries: Great source of carbs, while remaining low in sugar for fruit. Antioxidant and vitamin rich, high in fiber. Also, they taste retardedly good.
  • Grapefruit Juice: I’m not a huge proponent of juice, as I feel eating whole fruit also trumps its juicy counterpart. However, we need some liquid for this smoothie to operate and grapefruit adds a little tartness while also providing you with alkaline properties, lots of vitamin C, and disease preventing qualities as well.
  • Bananas: High in potassium and fructose. You gotta be careful with bananas because of the sugar content, but after a workout they’re great for replenishing your glycogen stores and spiking insulin for muscle building.
  • Kale: One of the healthiest things you can ingest. Kale has an ORAC score of 1770 which is a measure of antioxidants in a food. That’s a stellar number. Kale is said to be more nutritional than spinach, so F you Popeye!
  • Wheatgrass: Where to begin? One of the best sources of living chlorophyll. Great for repairing muscle tissue and regenerating the bloodstream. Yeah, that’s right. Great stuff. Detoxifies you inside, which improves outward appearance. Purifies the liver, boosts energy. This stuff is no joke.
  • Whey protein: We all know that protein is crucial for men, women, cats, dogs, dinosaurs, and… everyone else I missed. Builds muscle, keeps you satiated, tissue repair. All that good stuff.

Speaking of building muscle, I’m sure most of you know my friend Rusty Moore of Fitness Blackbook. Well this fitness expert and trusted friend has created a female-specific fitness program that is geared toward women who are looking for that slim and toned Hollywood look, without adding too much size, but building strength and tone in the right places. It’s called Visual Impact for Women and is well worth looking at. There are tons of generic workout ebooks out there, but this is personalized, and programmed for women aiming for that slim feminine physique! How cool is that?!

For the dudes out there, the original Visual Impact Course is a 3-course… meal? No, a 3-Phase workout program that will get you beach-worthy with dense muscle and detail so they can be shown off to all those chicks you’ve been trying to impress. A Greek God like body is possible if followed!

Primal Berry Wheatgrass Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 cup grapefruit juice
  • 3/4 cup fresh or frozen mixed berries
  • 1 tablespoon almond butter
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen kale
  • 1/2 cup fresh wheatgrass
  • 1 small-medium sized banana
  • 1 heaping scoop (about 25g protein) vanilla whey protein

Combine, blend, and enjoy… then feel like a rockstar and go out into the world and kick some ass. Perfect about 2 hours before an intense workout or right after. Also makes a great breakfast if you’re too lazy to cook that day.

Smoothies and self juicing really has many advantages when it comes to health.

The big thing I do have to say though is that it is best to do these on our own. Having them done at the big chain smoothie shops can easily turn a healthy option in to a diet disaster.

Which are the stores that sell wheatgrass i can’t find it anywhere?

  • http://hollywoodbodyfitness.com Craig Avera

    Jose,
You can usually find it at Whole Foods Market. If you don’t have one near you, try a Henry’s or other health food store… I buy a big container for $3 that will make about 10 smoothies. Hope you find a store that carries it!

  • Jose

Thanks for the quick response bro i appreciate your help

  • Paolo

Hi Craig! Been dying to try out this smoothie so I’ve been scouting out the ingredients. But I have a question. I went to a Whole Foods in Orange County to look for wheat grass. I asked for a powdered one and unfortunately the only ones they have are from $27-$42 for 30-60 servings respectively. And 1/2 cup of wheatgrass will be about 4 servings per pop which will greatly decrease the servings I can get out of one container and that’ll get pricey. You said you got yours for $3? Do you mind telling me what brand it is? Maybe it’s only in the Whole Foods in your area? Or maybe It’s been pulled? Because $3 for 10 smoothies is such a good deal. Thanks!

    Paolo,
I’ve heard the powdered what grass is just as effective, but the cost does rise for the convenience/packaging factor. I actually buy mine over in the produce section of my WF in a 10 oz.(I think) container… that’s the 3 dollar pack. Also, that stuff tends to sell out fast, but ask someone there if they do in fact carry it. Does your WF have a juice/smoothie bar? They will also sell wheat grass to you from there. Happy hunting :)

    Mark,
Gonna be sure to check out that flapjacks recipe… nothin better than fat burning flapjacks!

  • Paolo

Oh ok thanks. Yes mine does have a smoothie bar and wheatgrass seems to be the main product. So wait, you buy the fresh grass? not the powdered one? Ah I see. Ok well I’ll go over there and ask about a $3 container then.

  • Ben

    Craig,

Great recipe. Had a question about training though. Can Crossfit be an “aerobic activity”? I want to incorporate some traditional weight training during the week, but I want to have some creative cardio as well.

Can Crossfit achieve that? Maybe I’d do it with less weight? Or would crossfit on non-weight days be overkill? Just curious to hear your thoughts.

Just referencing your spartacus workout post where you recommended doing the spartacus routine on the non-weight training days…

  • http://hollywoodbodyfitness.com Craig Avera

    Ben,
Crossfit workouts can vary, but many of them are known as Met-Con workouts (metabolic conditioning). These are the most common Crossfit workouts and yes, have a heavy cardio base to them. They are dangerously effective at making you stronger, faster and leaner all at the same time so be careful :) Crossfit is the way to go. Plus, the workouts are constantly varied so you’ll never get bored. Let me know if you need any help or suggestions to start with.

  • Ben

    Ok, I got ya. Thanks.

So, do you actually perform traditional resistance workouts anymore or only Crossift?

That looks absolutely incredible. I’m a big smoothie guy myself and I’m also in love with the variety smoothies offer. I’m constantly throwing in new things to see how it alters the taste and effect.

I might have to put together a blog post to combat this one lol. Thanks for the great stuff.
