World Cup Finals, Opening Night, and Fitness Update

You know when you wake up with that “It’s gonna be a great day” feeling? Well I totally had that this morning. In fact I sprung out of bed with a big fat smile on my face. Why? Well there are too many awesome things and events going on today not to! First off, World Cup Finals in about 2 hours – GO SPAIN! The long awaited final match is here, and I’m sure it’ll be a great one. Remember that “Write the Future” Nike Commercial I posted up here awhile ago? Great visual effects, but it now said to be a curse, especially if the Nike sponsored Netherlands loses today. So we shall see… I’m an Adidas guy anyway, when it comes to soccer.

GO SPAIN!

Opening Night

Of what you ask? Well I was cast in a play called “The Dark Side of the Moon” a few weeks back. If you’re a Pink Floyd fan, then you better book a last minute plane ticket to Hollywood and come check this thing out! It’s going to rock. The show runs for 8 weeks, every Sunday night. A-List stars have come to see the production – Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, Tom Cruise, and Russel Brand, to name a few; and rumor has it that Nicholas Cage will be attending one of the performances as well.

The play has been running for nearly three years with a fresh cast cycled every few months. It’s been featured in LA Times and LA Weekly and is a very fun production. Check out more info about the theater. I’m playing as a “Minion” and am a bad guy in this one – it’s a fun role and I can’t wait to tear it up tonight! Beer Pong and after party to follow, so I’m cutting calories before the show so I can maintain my 7% body fat while still having a rowdy time tonight! Preplanning these days is key, as I wrote about here.

Update: My gymless summer workout

Actually first off, a confession. If you read my last article on here, then you know I dropped my gym membership temporarily to focus solely on outdoor cardio, sports training, and bodyweight and plyometric exercises to comprise my workouts. No heavy resistance all summer long! A huge change, yes, but I felt like I needed to switch up the gears, and maybe even lose a little muscle – as well as get back down to 5% body fat again. I could get to 5% body fat with or without the gym, that mostly comes down to diet, but I felt the change would be a good thing anyway.

So first off I have a confession to make: I did go to the gym yesterday… GASP. I was there to put my membership on “Freeze” as they call it, and all of a sudden became curious to see where my strength levels stood, because I’ve been gymless for 2 weeks now. First off I hit the incline DB Press. I was putting up 80 lb dumbbells for about 10-12 reps prior to my workout routine change. Yesterday, same results. I did a few other exercises and found the following results: My first set of each exercise was about the same as where I’d been before. In fact I did feel stronger in some lifts. But my stamina faded slightly. On sets 2-4, I could not maintain the same strength levels as prior. But I thought it would be worse.

Again, a big reason for this gymless routine switch is just for a little variety in the workout, but I am also excited to see what happens to my fitness levels, for experimental purposes, and to let you guys know what happens when such a change is made.

A VERY old high school soccer picture that was in the newspaper, after we beat the 4th State Ranked Tigard 1-0.

Pickup soccer, my new favorite workout

Yesterday I also took a jog down to Park La Brea which is a couple miles from my apartment to kick my soccer ball around. These guys were playing a 4 v4 match and needed an extra head so I obliged. We ended up playing 3 matches and I scored 7 goals; it’s my favorite form of cardio without question. We plan on meeting up every Saturday now, kind of like “The Sandlot” just to play some good old pickup soccer. After I scored one of the goals, it started pouring down rain for the first time in a long time…. so my self-proclaimed title is now “The Bringer of Rain” :)

    Craig,

Congrats on the gig. Sounds like you’ve got a lot of good stuff going on right now. Glad you are enjoying the soccer too. I’m pretty bummed that the World Cup is over, but I’ll survive. I was actually cheering for Netherlands, but Spain did well throughout the tournament. They deserved to win.

    Craig,
Congrats on the casting, should be fun! I’ll be interested to see how your strength levels change going forward…and wonder how much is a function of being “weaker” vs. your muscles not being used to weights/certain exercises (the “grease the groove” principle in reverse I guess).
